Growth Modification

You may have noticed that our doctor specializes in "Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics." While most people have heard of orthodontics, many are confused by the dentofacial orthopedics part of the title.

Essentially, while orthodontics entails the management of tooth movement, dentofacial orthopedics involves the guidance of facial bone growth and development. Jaw growth depends on environment, age and genetics. Timing of orthodontic treatment is critical to help guide the jaw growth that has been pre-programmed by genetics. Common orthopedic appliances include Expanders, Carriere or D2 appliance, and Facemask.

TO CORRECT EXCESS OVERJET "BUCK TEETH" - CARRIERE OR D2 APPLIANCE

carriere

This easy "bar" appliance takes about 6 months to reduce overjet. It is discreet, comfortable, hygienic and fast. Elastics are worn full time to reduce overjet and harmonize the bite but individual teeth will not be aligned. Full orthodontic treatment is needed after with either Invisalign or braces for a total of 20-24 months in treatment.

TO CORRECT CROSSBITES - EXPANSION APPLIANCE

rpe

Expanders are very common orthopedic devices to harmonize the width and balance the upper and lower jaws. Crossbites will be corrected as teeth move to a better relationship with less risk of wearing down enamel, and smile beauty is enhanced with a fuller smile. Full orthodontics is needed after with Invisalign or braces.

TO CORRECT EXCESS UNDERBITES - FACEMASK

facemask

For severe genetic underbites, a Facemask can guide the upper jaw forward to balance with a strong growing lower jaw. Full orthodontics is needed later with Invisalign or braces +/- jaw surgery if growth is extreme.
